The Short Answer
If you're sticking to Tbilisi, Kakheti, Batumi, and the main highways, a standard sedan or compact car is perfectly fine and more fuel-efficient. If Kazbegi in winter, Svaneti, Tusheti, or Racha's back roads are on your list, an SUV is strongly recommended.
When a Sedan Is Enough
- Tbilisi city driving and day trips to Mtskheta
- Kakheti wine region - mostly flat, well-paved roads
- Tbilisi to Batumi via the main highway
- Tbilisi to Kazbegi in spring through autumn, in good weather
When You'll Want an SUV
- Svaneti (Mestia, Ushguli) - mountainous, sometimes unpaved sections
- Tusheti - seasonal, high-clearance-only roads (some sections are 4x4 territory regardless of car type)
- Racha and Lake Shaori - mixed paved/gravel roads
- Kazbegi and the Jvari Pass in winter - snow and ice are common above 2,000m
Other Things to Consider
Group size and luggage matter too - an SUV simply fits more people and bags comfortably for a multi-day trip. If you're torn, our fleet page lets you filter by category, seats, and transmission so you can compare options side by side before booking.
